Three brown boxes sit on her desk—two filled, one halfway.
‘What are you doing?’
‘Redecorating. Martha says “barren is better”. Cardboard boxes are the new feng shui—much more stylish than drawers.’
‘He fired you.’ (He doesn’t care. He doesn’t want to know.) He moves closer.
‘I voted No.’
‘Why?’
‘Misplaced faith in humanity.’
She swipes angrily at her cheek but she isn’t crying. ‘To money,’ she toasts, and smiles bitterly. ‘You were right.’ She pushes the last box aside. ‘You’re always right.’
‘You tried.’
‘You didn’t.’
He wants to say I’m Sorry, but he doesn’t know the words.
